Welcome to the BSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences/ Pharmaceutical Biotechnology in the School of Pharmacy at Queen's. We are one of the leading centres in the UK and Ireland for Pharmaceutical Sciences research and teaching, as ranked by leading university guides. The School provides excellence in education, with the UK National Student Survey in 2016 having recorded 100% satisfaction ratings amongst our undergraduate students. Look around the School and you will see that we have some of the most up-to-date teaching and research facilities of any pharmacy/pharmaceutical sciences school in these islands. Many of our facilities were refurbished over the summer.
Our teaching is provided by academic staff members who are active in research and scholarship, pushing forward the boundaries of knowledge in pharmacy and the pharmaceutical sciences to provide you with a high quality educational experience in preparation for your chosen career.
Our teaching in pharmaceutical sciences is based on award-winning research in areas such as drug delivery and biomaterials, biotechnology, drug discovery and action. From new ways to control the global HIV pandemic to novel DNA vaccines, advanced pharmaceutical engineering technologies and drug delivery on the micro and nano scales, our staff will ensure you are prepared for an exciting career in the global science-based industries associated with the prevention and cure of disease.
The School of Pharmacy at Queen’s had an outstanding result in REF 2014, the national assessment of research quality in the UK. The outcome of REF 2014 showed that 92% of the School’s submitted research fell within the highest quality 4* and 3* categories, with 44% classed as world-leading research. The research environment within the School was rated as 100% world-leading (4*) and submitted examples of research impact were rated in the maximum quality group.
The School of Pharmacy at Queen’s now has more than 500 undergraduate students and almost 150 postgraduate research students. Many of our students come from a wide range of countries, reflecting the high international standing of the School. We are now offering our quality, innovative programmes in pharmaceutical sciences in China, based at the new China Queen’s College, bringing the Queen’s experience directly to a new cohort of students in Shenyang, North-East China. During this summer, some of our Chinese students visited Queen’s, and we hope to have regular student exchanges between Belfast and Shenyang Our dedicated team comprises academic, clerical and technical staff, all playing a vital role in delivering an educational experience that we hope you find worthwhile and also enjoyable (examinations not withstanding!)
The BSc degree is a three-year programme. If you are just starting out, that may seem a long time to spend but you will find it passing quickly and you will soon find yourself at our graduation ceremony receiving your degree certificate. Please remember, though, that you will reach that point only through hard work and a disciplined application to your studies. And remember, also, to have some fun along the way and enjoy what the School of Pharmacy and Queen’s University can offer!
